[00:00.180]Exercise 2.The giant panda[00:04.440]The giant panda has a very distinctive black-and-white coat,[00:08.692]and adults measure around 1.5 meters long and around 75 centimeters tall at the shoulders.[00:17.689]Males and females can weigh up respectively to 253 pounds and 220 pounds.[00:26.688]Giant pandas live in mountainous regions,[00:29.936]such as Sichuan, Gansu and Tibet.[00:34.441]And the panda has also become an informal national emblem for China,[00:39.691]and its image is found on many Chinese gold coins.[00:44.696]Despite being a type of animal living on meat,[00:47.714]the panda's diet is primarily plants which almost exclusively consist of bamboo.[00:55.468]This is an evolutionary recent adaption.[00:59.220]However, panda lack a proper chemical substance to digest bamboo efficiently,[01:05.210]and thus derive little energy and protein from it.[01:09.216]Now what worries us most is that giant pandas are an endangered species, threatened by continued habitat loss and by a very low birthrate , both in the wild and in the zoo.
